Sztokman and Sztokman suggest that one of the most powerful messages in the Torah “is the mission of the Jewish people to look after the vulnerable members of society.” They point out that, “the Torah tells us that we actually can change others’ lives and fates for the better. This radical idea, that we can and must intervene to alleviate the suffering of the other, is a defining concept of Jewish peoplehood.” They created the Gabriel Project Mumbai out of this idea, and describe their work towards ending hunger, malnutrition and offering long-term solutions to literacy and education. The work is not about their identities (or that of the Jewish volunteers), but about the obligation as human beings and Jews to care for those in need. ” The essence of Jewish peoplehood is this service to humanity.”
